Step 2.5 - Moving, copying and deleting files

MOVING A FILE USING THE MOUSE

After having created a folder, you can need move a file inside the new created folder.
1 - Set the pointer on the file to move
2 - drag the file (click on the file and keep the button of the mouse pressed)

3 - set the dragged file, on the folder of destination (if visible)
4 - leave the button of the mouse.

MOVING A FILE USING THE COMMANDS COPY AND PASTE

The folder and the files that you want to move, they are not often inside the same folder. It is therefore useful to know the system “copy and paste” to move a file.
1 - Set the pointer on the file to move
2 - click the right button of the mouse
3 - from the context menu, click on the entry “Cut”

4 - surf among the folders till you reach the desired folder
5 - access with a double-click in the selected folder
6 - click with the right button on an empty point of the window
7 - from the context menu, click on the entry “Paste”.

COPYING A FILE USING THE COPY AND PASTE COMMANDS

If you need to create a copy of a file in the same folder, proceed this way:
1 - set the pointer on the file to copy
2 - click the right button of the mouse
3 - from the context menu, click on the entry “Copy”


4 - Click with the right button on an empty point of the window
5 - From the context menu click on the entry “Paste”.

If you want to copy a file in another folder instead,
1 - set the pointer on the file to copy
2 - click the right button of the mouse
3 - from the context menu click on the entry “Copy”
4 - surf among the folders till you reach the desired folder
5 - access the selected folder
6 - click with the right button on an empty point of the window
7 - from the context menu click on the entry “Paste”.

COPYING A FILE USING THE MOUSE AND THE CTRL KEY

A fast method to copy a file is the following:
1 - set the pointer on the file to copy
2 - drag the file (click on the file and keep pressed the button of the mouse)
3 - set the dragged file, in a different position (for instance just on the right)
4 - press and keep pressed the button “CTRL” on the keyboard
5 - leave the button of the mouse
6 - leave the button “CTRL”.

DELETING A FILE

There are various methods to delete a file.
First method

1 - Click with the right button on the file to be deleted
2 - from the context menu, click on the entry “Delete”
3 - Click on the button “Yes” to confirm the elimination.


Second method
1 - Select with a click the file to delete
2 - press the key “CANC” by keyboard
3 - press the key “ENTER” to confirm.
Third method
1 - Select with a click the file to delete
2 - from the menu bar click on “File” and then on “Delete”
3 - click on the button “Yes” to confirm the elimination.

SELECTING MORE FILES WITH THE MOUSE

To delete, copy or move more files contemporarily, first of all you have to know how to select more files. Let's see how to select more files only using the mouse.
1 - Set the pointer beside the first file to select

2 - click and keep pressed the button of the mouse
3 - keeping pressed the button, move the pointer so that to mark out a rectangle that will select the files that are placed inside the same rectangle

4 - leave the button of the mouse.

SELECTING MORE FILES WITH THE KEYBOARD

To select more files using the keyboard,
1 - select the first file with a click
2 - press and keep pressed the key of the capital letter (on keyboard)
3 - press the arrow keys so that to select two or more files.

SELECTING ALL FILES

This method will select all the files and the folders that are placed inside the folder that you are displaying.
1 - from the toolbar click on “Organize”,
2 - click on the entry “Select All”.

SELECTING MORE NOT ADJACENT FILES

To select more non adjacent files,
1 - select the first file with a click
2 - press and keep pressed (from keyboard) the key “CTRL”
3 - select the second file with a click
4 - press and keep pressed (from keyboard) the key “CTRL”
5 - Select the third file with a click.

... and so on.
This method is also used to unselect a file, keeping selected the others. For instance, if you have to select the all the files except one,
1 - select al the files (menu file - Select all)
2 - press and keep pressed (from keyboard) the key “CTRL”
3 - click on the file to unselect.

DELETING, COPYING OR CONTEMPORARILY MOVING A SET OF FILES

Once selected the files, you can copy, cut or delete the same, clicking on a file selected with the right key and choosing from the context menu, respectively, Copy, Cut or Delete.

RECOVERING A FILE FROM THE RECYCLE BIN

When file or folders are deleted from the hard disk, these are not definitely deleted, but they are stored in the folder “Recycle Bin”.
If you want to recover a file from the Recycle Bint,

1 - from the desktop, open the Recycle Bin (click twice in fast succession)
2 - click with the right key on the file to be recovered
3 - from the context menu click on “Restore”.

The file will be put again in the folder from which has been deleted.

EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN

To empty the Recycle Bin, definitely deleting (or almost), its content,
1 - from the desktop, click with the right button on the Recycle Bin icon
2 - from the context menu, click on “Empty Recycle Bin”

3 - click on the button “Yes” to confirm.

DELETE THE FILES IN DEFINITIVE WAY

If you have noticed, I have written “... or almost” on the preceding paragraph, this because they exist some programs that can recover the files even cancelled by the Recycle Bin. A good method to delete the files, in definitive way, is to defrag the hard disk or the interested disk drive (see Step 2.11).

COPYING A FILE ON THE FLOPPY DISK OR PENDRIVE

To copy a file or folder on a floppy disk (from the hard disk),
1 - click with the right key on the file to be copied
2 - from the context menu, set the pointer on the entry “Send to”
3 - click on “Floppy” or on Pen drive (or similar entries).


The copy of the file will be started and it will conclude with the automatic closing of the window “Copy in progress....”
