Step 3.2 - Knowing the keyboard

THE KEYBOARD

Well, let's finally start writing, and try to know better the second tool that allows us to be in contact with the computer:
THE KEYBOARD.

THE CURSOR

The CURSOR is that vertical bar that flashes on the Document. The type corresponding to the key pressed by keyboard will be displayed on the right of the cursor. Keep always an eye on that flashing bar, before pressing a key!

MY FIRST DOCUMENT

Write with the keyboard:
My first document.

HOW DO YOU DO THAT...?

And you immediately could have here some Doubts already.
How can I split the words?
How do I do to write in small letters or in capitals?
How do I do to cancel?
Stop! One thing at a time!

SPLITTING THE WORD BY THE SPACE BAR

To split to word, before writing the next one, press the SPACE BAR.
The SPACE BAR is situated down in the middle of the keyboard (it is the only key that has no sign).

CANCELLING BY THE BACKSPACE KEY

Look the cursor now.
You see it flashing on the right of the last type you have written.
Press the BACKSPACE key by the keyboard (it is up on the right of the keyboard and it is represented by a long left arrow).
The type that is situated on the left of the cursor is cancelled.

MOVING THE CURSOR BY THE ARROW KEYS

Press now the left ARROW KEY by the keyboard.
You can find the “arrow keys” down on the right of the keyboard, and they are represented by 4 arrows.
The cursor (the one flashing on the document) moved without cancelling any type.
Press more times the left arrow key up to move the cursor to the beginning of the word document.

CANCELLING BY THE DELETE KEY

Press the KEY DELETE. It is situated up on the right of the keyboard, and it is represented by the writing "Delete".
The type on the right of the cursor is cancelled.

CANCELLING AND WRITING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TEXT

Cancel now the word first, and write the word second.
Look. WHILE YOU CANCEL, the words, which are on the right of the cursor, move to the left so that they don't let empty spaces.
And vice versa, WHILE YOU ARE WRITING, the words, on the right of the cursor, move to the right to let space to the new typed words.

THE HOME KEY

Press the Key HOME. It is on the right of the keyboard, and it is represented by an oblique arrow turned up to the left.
The cursor moves to the beginning of the text (on the same line).

THE END KEY

Press the END KEY. It is on the right of the keyboard, and it is represented by the writing END.
The cursor moves to the end of the text (on the same line).

THE ENTER KEY

Press the ENTER KEY. It is on the right of the keyboard, and it is represented by a left arrow ending with a line turning upward.
The cursor moves down, creating a line.

DELETING A LINE OR BETTER, DELETING A PARAGRAPH

If you now press the backspace key,
the line is cancelled, moving the cursor on the upper line.
Whenever you want to delete a line, set the cursor at the beginning of the line and press the backspace key.
Or,
set the cursor at the end of the line and press the Delete key.
More precisely, the PARAGRAPH is eliminated and this should respectively set us:
at the beginning of the first line of the paragraph or at the end of the last line of the paragraph.

THE PARAGRAPH

A text can be composed by one or more paragraphs.
The line that you have just written is a paragraph.
A paragraph ends when you press Enter by keyboard and start writing the following paragraph.
A paragraph can be composed by one or more text lines.
Press the key END and you press ENTER.
Write the following text without pressing the key Enter:
Now I start writing a new paragraph and this paragraph will be composed by more lines because at the end of the line I don't press the key Enter, but keep on writing until the text reaches the end of the line and automatically the words that I write will begin a new one.
Push the key Enter now.

THE COMMAND SHOW/ HIDE

To distinguish the paragraphs that are in the text,
from the "Home Tab" set the mouse pointer on the icon (the command) SHOW / HIDE (represented by an upside down P) and click.
In the text they appear some upside-down P.
These upside-down P represent the end of the paragraph.
Click on show/hide again to hide them.

THE STOP CAPITALS KEY [ CAPS LOCK ]

After this small digression, let's start again with the keyboard!

Click the CAPS LOCK key (it is on the left of the keyboard and it is represented by a padlock), and write:
I WRITE IN CAPITALS.
Press the Caps Lock Key and write:
I write in small letters.
Note: When you begin a new paragraph or after having typed a full stop, the program Word automatically changes the first type from small letter to capital. Look besides that, every time you press the Caps Lock to enable the capitals, on the keyboard a warning light is on.
When instead the capitals are disabled, the warning light is off.

THE SHIFT KEY

Disable the capitals by the Caps Lock key. You can write in capitals, also using the SHIFT key.
However you have not to simply touch it, but you have to press it and keep it presses while, by another finger, you press another type.

KEYS WITH MORE TYPES

Look the keyboard.
On some keys more than one character are printed (all the keys with the numbers, for instance, have another type up).
If you press the keys with the numbers, in the document the respective numbers are written.
To write the types that are situated in the upper part of the keys, you have to keep the Shift key pressed.

KEYS WITH THREE TYPES

Some keys have three types printed.
The third type (the one on the right - and this is also valid for the key with € symbol, even if it has only two types),
can be written in the document,
keeping it pressed the key ALTGR, in this case.

THE CTRL KEY

The key CTRL is used with other keys to execute keyboard commands in fast way, without using the mouse.
You can find it down on the left, and on the right of the keyboard.
